This is the Intel i7-940 quad core processor; it has a 8M Cache, a clock speed of 2.93 GHz, 4.80 GT/s (gigatransfers per second). It is part of the newer Intel i3, i5, i7 family, and I wouldn’t be timid about using any of them in a computer build. I have built many computers with this family of processors and they all have performed above my expectations.
This processor incorporates mult-threading, which means true multi-tasking. So with each processor being able to do two tasks at once, it’s like having a 8 core processor. This means a more robust computer that can keep up with the work load. Having all of this processing capability means less waiting, less computer lock ups, and less frustration.
At the time of this posting, this processor ran at $259.97. Which may seem a lot just for a processor, but if you calculated in all of your saved time with this processor the extra cost would quickly pay off.
This processor also comes with the fan which I like because you know it is going to work with your processor. If you are not over-clocking, it will be all you need providing your case has enough ventilation. Also, you can see in the picture below the fan also comes with the required thermal paste already applied to the heat exchanger. How convenient is that!?! If you need one of these, you can pick one up here. -> Intel Core i7 940
